LONDON CITY AIRPORT SUPPORTS CITIZENSHIP WEEK

Yesterday, Monday 05 February 2007, Britannia Village Primary School visited London City Airport as part of their Citizenship Week Programme.  Through visiting the Airport the students in Year Three had the opportunity to learn what is involved in growing up and surviving in the adult world.

Citizenship Week is a South West Newham Education Action Zone initiative that provides children with an opportunity to operate as responsible citizens, demonstrate good behaviour and develop positive attitudes.

As a key employer in the London Borough of Newham and as one of Europe’s leading Airports for business travel, London City Airport's Community Relations Manager Elizabeth Hegarty felt that the envolvement of Airport staff in support of Citizenship Week demonstrated a wide range of employment opportunities: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the students from Britannia Village.  The success story behind the Airport highlights how the growing regional economy benefits the community.  Plus, as an employer we provide a large number of career opportunities for local people.  Our focus on social responsibility means we are actively involved in providing support to our local community.  This all helps young people answer that question we are all asked – what do you want to be when you grow up?”

The London City Airport Citizenship Programme encouraged students to learn about the many different job opportunities that exist at the Airport.  Security Officers, Police Officers, Customer Services Agents and Fireman met with the children to talk about their jobs.  The children were also given a tour of the Airport so that they could see people at work performing different roles.

The children also explored why people have to go to work and discussed what people have to spend their money on, concentrating on living expenses.  In one exercise the children were asked what job they would like to do and spent time finding more out about the role.  This earned them their pay cheque, which they then had to decide how to spend.

Linda-May Bingham, Head Teacher for Britannia Village Primary School said: “It was the second year that the students completed the ‘London City Airport Programme’ and again it proved very popular and a huge success.  The children who took part were enthused by the visit and their experiences.  It gave them an opportunity to understand the jobs that people do at an airport and the experience of 'earning' money and making decisions about how to spend it.

“I would like to thank the staff of London City Airport for all their support and congratulate them on delivering a programme that excited the children and encouraged them in their personal development.”
