The chief executive of London City Airport, Richard Gooding OBE, has been accredited as one of the industry’s biggest drivers of change in this year’s Business Travel World magazine’s BTW50. The annual review ranked Gooding as most influential person in the business travel industry, recognising his contribution to the immense success of London City Airport.
The magazine’s editor, Betty Lowe, said, “as London City’s star ascends, boosted by the nearby Olympics in 2012, Gooding’s star will undoubtedly too”. Appointed to his position at London City Airport in 1996, Richard Gooding’s forty-year experience in the aviation sector is no doubt a key driver to the success of London City Airport.
The airport handled record passenger numbers in the first six months of 2007, further demonstrating its continued success as the outbound portal of choice for business travellers in the City and Canary Wharf. Up to the end of June, almost 1.4million passengers travelled through London City Airport, an 18 per cent increase over the same period in 2006.
A total of 12 airlines fly to 31 destinations out of Docklands-based London City Airport, with Air France recently launching new routes to Nice and Belfast whilst BA CityFlyer added Glasgow to its portfolio of destinations. SAS will also launch a twice-daily route to Oslo in August 2007.
The airport, celebrating its 20th anniversary in October, has grown exponentially through demand from both business and leisure passengers. The direct 22-minute DLR link to London’s Bank station enables business travellers a fast and convenient transit to the airport. Canary Wharf benefits from its three-mile proximity to the airport with a fast 14-minute transfer. The airport’s ten-minute check-in time remains a unique and very attractive feature for the business traveller.
London City Airport this week commenced construction of its new aircraft stands, a £19 million project that will be completed in the summer of 2008. The additional stands will add additional parking spaces for aircraft, allowing for the airport to further grow its business and routes.
