London City Airport launched its new careers brochure, Airport Careers, this week, further strengthening the company’s firm commitment to employing people from the local area.
Representatives from local employment organisations, the East London Business Alliance, Connexions, London Borough of Newham Access to Jobs Team and all the secondary schools in Newham were invited to attend the launch. The brochure, which outlines roles, responsibilities, requirements, average salaries, top tips and contact details for all the main roles available at London City Airport, was presented to the audience at an information event hosted at the airport’s headquarters. Staff from many departments of the airport answered questions about their roles, responsibilities and career success stories.
"I think Airport Careers has exactly the right format combining information about requirements and responsibilities with an interview with someone who is actually doing the job," said Michele Bailleux, director of the Royal Docks Partnership.
The new brochure, targeted at local students and jobseekers, forms part of London City Airport’s Education Excellence programme. The airport’s programme aims to improve basic skills, raise aspirations and assist with the transition from education to employment. From primary to higher education, the programme enables local people to arm themselves with the skills necessary to be successful candidates for jobs at London City Airport and its onsite partner companies.
To ensure local residents and employment organisations are kept informed of airport opportunities, the community relations team work closely with Newham’s Access to Jobs department. Employment opportunities for the largest departments including Ground Services and Security are made available through Newham’s employment one-stop shop, Workplace.
Currently 35 per cent of employees working at London City Airport are residents of Newham, with an impressive 70 per cent living within a five-mile radius of the airport.
