One of London City Airport’s longest standing employees, Sharon Preston, has been awarded the coveted ‘Woman in Aviation’ award by Airfinance Journal. Sharon was presented the award at a reception at London’s Soho House on 19 September 2007.

Recognising the female talent pool in the aviation sector, Airfinance teamed up with Odgers, Ray & Berndston to compile a comprehensive list of women who have made a valuable contribution to the aviation industry. The industry was then canvassed to cast their votes according to the most influential women in the industry. The final results will be featured in a special supplement marking the publication’s 300th issue.

Sharon Preston has dedicated almost her entire working life at London City Airport, successfully developing her career to her current role of Director of Airfield Operations. A member of the airport’s executive committee, Sharon joined the airport when it opened in 1987 as a terminal information assistant and has since risen through the ranks. Through the years, Sharon held posts including airfield operations manager, general manager security, head of operations, security and airport fire service before being promoted to her current position in 2005. Sharon was tasked with setting up the airport operations department in 1996, a function that is considered as a benchmark by a host of regional airports across Europe.

Through Sharon’s determination and sheer hard work, she has carved out a career for herself in a male dominated industry as a respected and talented individual. Sharon’s contribution to the airport has led it to continue to grow exponentially year-on-year. With a record number of passengers travelling through London City Airport in 2007, there is no better time to recognise Sharon’s achievements to both the airport and the aviation sector as a whole.
