London City Airport Hits the Hoops

London City Airport invited local Newham secondary schools to compete in a basketball mini-tournament on Wednesday 26 September 2007. The winning team, Royal Docks Community School, triumphed at 14-10 points.

With the assistance of Pat Hector, Partnership Development Officer for the Langdon School Sports Partnership, London City Airport brought together local Newham secondary schools to compete in the basketball mini-tournament.

Eastlea, Royal Docks, Langdon, Cumberland, and Rokeby Schools all submitted a team to participate in the round-robin competition refereed by Newham All Star Sports Academy Officials.

Langdon School kindly provided use of their school gym as a venue and the schools battled it out until Royal Docks played Langdon School in an exciting close-shave final.  Royal Docks Community School finally triumphed 14 – 10 points.

The winning team and their school coaches were each rewarded a winning medal and invited to watch the NBA Live Basketball Match between the Boston Celtics and Minnesota Timberwolves at the airport’s hospitality suite at the O2 on Wednesday 10 October.  Airport Fire Station Manager Dave Barclay and Custom House Ward Councillor, Pat Holland joined the team to celebrate.

Each player from the runner-up team was presented with a basketball in recognition of their achievement in getting to the final.

The Tournament was devised by the airport’s community relations team as part of the Community Health & Fitness Programme, with the aim of praising student’s commitment to a sport and teamwork.
