London City Airport has launched the 11th Art Awards. Artists and photographers that reside within five miles of the airport are invited to enter the awards, sponsored by the London Borough of Newham.
This year, in celebration of Newham being the home of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, both amateur and professional artists are asked to theme their work around the Games. Artists are asked “What do the Olympics coming to Newham mean to you?”
All entries will be viewed by a team of judges led by Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport with the short-listed selection to be exhibited to the public at the airport. Winners have a chance to win a first prize of £500, second prize of £300 or third prize of £200.
Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham said “We have sponsored the Annual Art Awards for many years and are pleased to continue to offer our support. We have so much creative talent within our borough and the awards is a brilliant way to recognise this. The 2012 Games is the perfect opportunity for Newham to shine and I hope this is reflected in the art work submitted. I am really looking forward to seeing this year’s entries”.
Richard Gooding said “There can only be one overall winner but all of the finalists will have experienced something just as valuable as winning. The Annual Art Awards finalists’ exhibition will be displayed in the departure terminal and viewed by thousands of passing passengers from around the world each week. In previous years passengers have been so impressed with the entries that they have bought artwork and taken it with them on their flight!”
The closing date for entries is Friday 2 May 2008. For further information regarding the Annual Art Awards 2008 please contact Linda Alexander on 020 7646 0056.
