London City Airport’s 13th annual Fun Day and Air Show takes place on 4 July 2009. Offering free entry to visitors, the afternoon is filled with exciting activities for the entire family.
The airport is located in the Royal Docks part of the London Borough of Newham, just two miles from the site of the 2012 Olympic Games. In keeping with the airport’s long term focus on promoting health and well-being in the community, this year’s Fun Day has a sporting theme with the opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics coming to London.
Visitors at this year’s Fun Day can try many sporting activities including basketball, football, taekwondo and rowing. An inflatable area provides fun and frolics with sumo wrestling, strong man strikers, gyroscopes and a soft play area for our younger visitors. A bungee trampoline and climbing wall will challenge the more adventurous along with a boxing ring and capoeira workshops, provided by local charity Fight for Peace. This whole area is made possible thanks to the kind generosity of sponsors Aer Arann.
A 50 metre sports track will be operated by Greenwich Leisure Ltd, offering visitors the opportunity to compete in traditional sports day activities including egg and spoon, sack and three legged races. Newham Sports Academy will invite participants to try their talents in javelin, shot put, and other sporting activities with elite coaches on the lookout for talented young sports people.
London City Airport is an active member of East London Business Alliance (ELBA) and their Legacy 2020 projects; sponsoring four Olympic hopefuls from Newham. These young athletes will join ELBA on the day to provide training and encouragement to local people.
Coaches from West Ham United Football Club will provide training sessions to people of all ages, with Barclays Bank providing an inflatable football pitch to demonstrate newly-learnt skills.
The London Borough of Newham will bring a host of educational fun and entertainment to the event with face painters, badge making stations, instrument making, a cycle simulator and lots more.
Fun Day’s title sponsor, British Airways, will this year offer visitors the chance to go on board an aircraft. British Airways pilots and crew will be on hand to deliver once-in-a-lifetime tours of the cockpit of an Avro RJ100 or RJ85. With two aircraft de-icers on hand for kids to enjoy and an assortment of activities including a mobile simulator, customer service interactive sessions and the opportunity to dress up in BA uniforms, the British Airways village will undoubtedly be the highlight of the day.
London City Airport’s special guest, actor Colin Salmon of James Bond fame, will join Mayor Sir Robin Wales and Richard Gooding, Chief Executive of the airport on stage to announce the winners of this year’s exciting raffle prize draw.
Two land trains will chug along the entire event space, sponsored by the Docklands Light Railway.
One of the main highlights of the afternoon is the jaw dropping air show. The only air show in London will have everyone looking up to skies to watch an array of aircraft performing breathtaking stunts.
Fun Day is a spectacular day out for the communities surrounding the airport and provides the opportunity to raise much needed funds for Richard House Children’s Hospice. The hospice provides care and respite to families and children with life-limited illnesses. All cash raised on the day is donated directly to Richard House with the kind assistance of sponsor Travelex.
Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport said: “Organising an event of this scale takes an entire year to plan, transforming an operational airport into an event arena in just a few hours is an enormous project undertaken by the airport team. Outdoing previous years Fun Days is always a hard task, however this year we are determined to bring even more fun to Fun Day. Together with sporting displays, the air show, special guests and fun other surprises, this year’s Fun Day should definitely not be missed.”
Fun Day is made possible through the kind generosity of its sponsors. Sponsors this year include British Airways, Global Infrastructure Partners, Airbus, Aer Arann, Docklands Light Railway, Air BP, Travelex, Atkins, Red Vista and London Borough of Newham.
