Local youngsters at Play-with-Us after school club, Beckton, have been getting green fingered recently by planting vegetable seeds donated by London City Airport. This donation forms part of a programme at Play-with-Us to teach children about gardening and healthy eating.
Play-with-Us out of school provision is based at Windsor Primary School in Beckton which also offers a school holiday programme and extra curricular activities for local youngsters aged 4 to 11 years old. The gardening project sponsored by the airport, is aimed at promoting planting and the benefits of healthy eating, and will be an ongoing theme throughout the summer with follow-up cookery sessions using the newly grown fruit and vegetables. The airport’s community team was on hand to volunteer at one of the sessions to help with the planting and to meet the youngsters involved with the project.
London City Airport lends its support to the project as part of its health and wellbeing for work programme, which engages young people in health initiatives to encourage them to get active, aim high and achieve their goals for a positive future.
Sola Adebiyi, Projects Manager at the club said ‘The grant awarded to us has helped purchase seeds, plants and equipment for the garden. The project has enabled the children to learn how to grow their own vegetables, how to create healthy meals and gives them a real sense of responsibility in looking after the gardens’.
