Football festival takes off with donation from London City Airport

Young people with disabilities from all over London recently got a chance to compete in an exciting annual summer football tournament held by South London Special League. The event held at Greenwich’s London Marathon Playing Fields was sponsored by London City Airport, through its community programme.

South London Special League (SLSL) is a non profit organisation that offers opportunities for young people through sport to improve their lives, increase fitness, raise their self esteem and heighten their aspirations. Over 200 young people from various London schools competed in several leagues such as primary, girls, under 14’s and under 16’s with the runners up and winners receiving a trophy as well as an award for fair play, all awarded by Greenwich’s Mayor David Grant. The event was staged using a £1,500 donation from the airport as well as airport volunteers on the day.

Sharon Brokenshire, Founder of SLSL said: ‘It was a wonderful day with perfect weather. We saw about 200 young disabled, boys and girls play fabulous football and lots of fair play. It was inspirational! A great day to reflect the Olympic and Paralympic values!’

London City Airport has supported this event for three years as part of its community health and wellbeing programme aimed at promoting healthy living in the local area around the airport.

Editors note

London City Airport (LCY) is the only airport situated in London itself, just two miles from the site of the 2012 Olympic Games, three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End – linked to all via the LCY Docklands Light Railway station. Welcoming over 3 million passengers in 2011, LCY is not only uniquely convenient, but offers a uniquely rapid transit, through check-in and security to the departure lounge and gate, of around 20 minutes. 10 airlines fly out of LCY, serving over 40 destinations – the latest additions for 2012 are Basel, Mahon, Angers, Quimper, Venice and Aberdeen. LCY is on Twitter (@londoncityairport) and further information about flights, destinations and airport services can be found at www.londoncityairport.com.
