Trio of Local Students To Receive Airport Bursary
Three female students from East London are to receive a helping hand with their university studies, thanks to London City Airport.
The airport’s University Prize Scheme provides financial assistance with a £2,000 bursary for each year of a three year course, as well as management mentors and paid work experience.
The three lucky students selected to join the scheme in the 2013/14 academic year are Michelle Appeah from East Ham, Lorraine James from Stratford and Katharine Horsburgh from Eltham.
Now in its ninth year, the London City Airport University Prize Scheme has awarded in excess of £200,000 in grants to local students since it began.
Liam McKay, Head of CSR at London City Airport said: “The University Prize Scheme is designed to help local young people realise their potential. Michelle, Lorraine and Katharine have excellent academic ability, but of equal importance in their selection was their attitude to learning and their ambitions for the future. I’m confident that they will all embrace and benefit from the opportunities offered to them through the scheme. Buoyed by the belief we have shown in them as individuals, I am sure we will see them go on to achieve great things and look forward to watching their progress.”
London City Airport (LCY) is the only London airport situated in London itself, just three miles from Canary Wharf, seven miles from the City and 10 miles from London’s West End and linked to all via the Docklands Light Railway. Catering for over 3 million passengers and 70,000 movements annually, in 2012 LCY celebrated its millionth flight, 36 millionth passenger and 25 years of operation. LCY offers a unique rapid transit proposition – a short check in, door to lounge, and a shorter arrival, tarmac to train. 11 airlines fly out of LCY, serving 47 destinations, eight of which were new for 2012, with six further announced in 2013. The airport has permission to increase its operation to 120,000 movements per annum, which it intends to do by 2023.
