London Underground trade unions are planning a 24-hour strike on the Tube from 18:30 on Wednesday 5 August. If the strike goes ahead, Tube services will stop running from 18:30 on Wednesday 5 August until Friday 7 August. There will be no Tubes on Thursday 6 August. We are expecting normal service to resume on Friday. London Underground, Overground and TfL rail services are also set to run as per usual but are likely to be busier than normal. London City Airport is granted planning approval

08/10/2008

London City Airport tonight welcomes the decision of London Borough of Newham to grant permission to grow the airport to 120,000 flight movements per annum.

This decision recognises the airport's importance in the community, its contribution to the local economy and the increased number of jobs that will become available to local residents as a result of its growth.

Editors note

Notes to editors:

London City Airport takes its environmental and community responsibilities very seriously. In keeping with its commitment to the community, the airport has adopted a number of practices to ensure it mitigates the impact of its operation on its neighbours.

Operating hours
The approved planning application to increase flight numbers at London City Airport will see no change to the current airport operating hours.

Sound insulation
Sound insulation for affected residents around London City Airport is triggered at a lower level than any other airport in the UK and a commitment to continue the sound insulation programme was included in the approved application, meaning more local homes will be eligible.

In the community
Since it opened 21 years ago, a programme of community engagement has been in place at London City Airport with staff delivering educational, environmental, health and wellbeing programmes in the local area.  London City Airport has strived to work with, and be a part of the local community to make sure its economic success affects as many local people as possible, with any environmental impact negatively affecting as few local people as possible.

London City Airport works hard to provide training and skills development opportunities to local people who want to work at the airport. The airport has a strong relationship with local councils and employment organisations to further increase the already substantial number of local people working onsite.

Employment
Throughout the airport’s history many thousands of local people have worked at the airport. London City Airport is now the largest private sector employment site in Newham. Along with its concessions, airlines and handling agents there are over 2000 people working at the airport. Of these 68% of staff live within the local area of the airport with 29% living in Newham.

Consultation
Extensive communication and consultation on the interim planning application has been undertaken by both London City Airport and London Borough of Newham. In addition, the airport’s Consultative Committee provides a forum for residents, councils and other airport stakeholders to communicate their views. The airport community newsletter, “Runway News”, is delivered to 20,000 local residents three times annually with updates on airport activities and direct telephone numbers and email addresses of relevant staff.
