Applicants sought for airport university prize scheme

11/08/2009

The London City Airport University Prize Scheme (UPS), which aims to increase management potential within local boroughs, is now inviting applications from students for 2009.

London City Airport is seeking young people who are planning to start university in September 2009 and are studying a subject relevant to the airport business, such as transport, tourism, business, geography or languages.

The UPS is now in its fifth year and supports local students with grants and paid work placements. Since the scheme began in 2004 the airport has awarded grants of more than £130,000 to 13 Newham students.

In addition to receiving a £2000 per year grant and a personal mentor students also benefit from a paid work experience placement at the airport. During their placement the students will spend time in a range of departments to gain an understanding of the operation of an airport.  The students can also take advantage of help and guidance from a personal mentor throughout their time at university. The dedicated team of mentors is made up of departmental managers from the airport.

Folu, one of the Newham residents benefiting from the scheme has achieved a 1st Class honours degree from University College London this year said “I come from a single parent family with six children so the financial support has enabled me to buy books and a computer to help with my studies. I have since been accepted to Oxford University to study a Masters in Mathematics and Computer Science”

The three graduating students for 2009 were recently invited to the airport to attend the annual celebration where they were presented with trophies and gift vouchers in recognition of their success. During the event all of the UPS students gave short presentations on how the financial, mentoring and work experience support had assisted them.
