Airport Launches First Ramp Academy

18/08/2014

London City Airport has launched an aviation industry training and recruitment programme developed in conjunction with Newham Council’s employment service Workplace.

A group of 12 recruits have successfully been chosen for the six-month Ramp Academy scheme, developed as part of the airport’s on-going commitment to providing training and employment opportunities in Newham.

Course participants will learn the job of an airport Ramp Services Agent, providing a springboard for career development at LCY and into the wider aviation industry. The course will cover different aspects of ground aviation operations and airfield safety to prepare them for the role of handling the safe and efficient arrival and departure of aircraft. There will be classroom-based learning as well as plenty of on-the-job training and valuable work experience.

The job involves tasks such as marshalling aircraft on and off stand, loading/unloading luggage and cross-checking against manifests, ensuring safety of passengers embarking/disembarking, and participating in other aspects of the aircraft turnaround process.

Lee Russell, Director of Ramp Services at London City Airport said: “The airport is one of the largest employers in Newham, with 27 per cent of our workforce living in Newham and 61 per cent from the wider area. We are committed to providing opportunities and helping to equip people with skills to develop their future careers. The Ramp Academy does exactly that and will set people up for a career at London City Airport and across the wider aviation industry.”

Ramp services agents work in crucial front line roles at the airport. Candidates were put forward by Workplace and selected by the airport on the basis of enthusiasm, commitment and resilience.

Mr Russell continued: “If the ramp agents weren’t there, the airport couldn’t operate. Our team handle around 250 flights in and out of the airport every day. During peak hours it is non-stop and we are quite rare in that we employ those staff directly, rather than outsourcing. It’s all part of what makes LCY such a great place to work.”

Councillor Terry Paul, Newham’s Mayoral Adviser for Skills and Adult Learning, said: “Workplace was developed to ensure local people benefit from local jobs and local regeneration. It’s a place where employers can place their vacancies to recruit quality staff. I am delighted Workplace has been able to help London City Airport find the right recruits for the Ramp Academy.”

On completion of the academy, successful candidates will be considered for permanent roles at the airport.
