The local Rubislaw rock from which Aberdeen takes its ‘Granite City’ nickname is an apt symbol for the place as a whole, being hard-wearing, resolutely Scottish and full of interesting nooks and bumps. Oil wealth has helped the city to become one of the most appealing in the country, with a classy range of hotels, clubs and restaurants now complementing established attractions such as the Maritime Museum and Aberdeen Art Gallery. For out-of-town exploration, Royal Deeside, home to Balmoral Castle, sits a short distance to the west. To find out more click here and see our guide, 24 hours in Aberdeen.
