France. Pau.

An elegant French town in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Pau is the capital of Béarn province and has the cultural and historical clout to show for it. It’s home to a majestic chateau that was once the residence of Henri IV, and the town can also claim to be the site of the first ever Grand Prix race (it took place in 1901 and was won, appropriately, by a Frenchman). Among Pau’s ornate houses and flower-filled parkland, you’ll also find a fine spread of the time-honoured restaurants that southwest France excels in.
