Avignon AVN

Medieval ramparts and Michelin stars make for a congenial combination, particularly when you’re dealing with somewhere as unfeasibly handsome as Avignon. Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List – and frankly, how could it not be? – the palace-topped city was the seat of papal power for over a century. Crucially, however, there’s more to the place than its soaring Rhône-side architecture and burnished sense of history: its restaurants are often world-class, the best of its hotels are magnificent, and its annual arts festival still stands as one of the biggest in Europe.
